Established in Grace
2 Thessalonians 2:13-3:5 Believers are emboldened to pray because we are established in grace. God chose us (2 Thessalonians 2:13-15) God comforts us (2 Thessalonians 2:16-17) God establishes us (2 Thessalonians 3:1-5)
The Interpretation of Prophecy
2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 Don’t be deceived by speculations about the future. The Source of Alarm (2 Thessalonians 2:1-2) The Signs of the Day of the Lord (2 Thessalonians 2:3-7) The apostasia must take place The man of lawlessness must be revealed The restrainer must be taken out of the way The Suppression of Antichrist (2 Thessalonians 2:8) The Sentence of the Unrighteous (2 Thessalonians 2:9-12) Tools for Interpreting Prophecy: When plain sense makes good sense, seek no other sense. While We Wait
1 Thessalonians 5:16-28God wills for us to grow in holiness. Train your heart (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18). Test truth claims (1 Thessalonians 5:19-22). Trust God’s faithfulness (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24). Team with the brethren (1 Thessalonians 5:25-28).
The Day of the Lord
1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 Live Expectantly… We have been informed about the Lord’s intervention (1 Thessalonians 5:1-3). We are children of the day (1 Thessalonians 5:4-8). We are destined for salvation from God’s wrath (1 Thessalonians 5:9-11).
Sanctified Sexuality
1 Thessalonians 4:1-8 Sexual Sanctification: Abstain from sexual immorality (1 Thessalonians 4:3) Learn how to control your body (1 Thessalonians 4:4) Refrain from wronging others (1 Thessalonians 4:6) We must obey God’s instruction on sexuality. Because Christ will judge us for taking advantage of others (1 Thessalonians 4:6). Because God’s will for us is holiness (1 Thessalonians 4:3, 1 Thessalonians 4:7). Because we reject God when we reject His will (1 Thessalonians 4:8).
Sturdy Faith
1 Thessalonians 2:13-16 Don’t let your faith be shaken… God has spoken (13) God is watching (14-16a) God is working (16b)a. Unperceived Wrathb. Visitation Wrathc. Tribulation Wrathd. Damnation Wrath
The Transforming Power of the Gospel
1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 The Gospel changes a person: Conversion changes our virtues (1 Thessalonians 1:2-5). Conversion changes our resolve (1 Thessalonians 1:6-7). Conversion changes our priorities (1 Thessalonians 1:8). Conversion changes our master (1 Thessalonians 1:9-10). Four reasons 1 Thessalonians 1:10 is a reference to a pretribulation rapture: Waiting for Jesus is related to being rescued from wrath. Paul’s flow of thought in Thessalonians supports identifying “wrath” with the Tribulation. The word ῥύομαι with ἐκ can communicate removal to safety…
The Triumph of Forgiveness
2 Corinthians 2:5-17 Christ’s forgiveness leads our church in triumph over Satan: By giving the group restraint in correction (2 Corinthians 2:5-11). By helping us turn the page on personal offences (2 Corinthians 2:12-13). By giving us gospel authority and opportunity everywhere we go (2 Corinthians 2:14-17).
The Resurrection of the Son of God
John 19:38-20:31 Proposition: The resurrection of Jesus demands awe. Belief at the empty tomb (20:1-10) Belief when seeing (20:11-29) Belief from testimony (20:30-31) So what? The resurrection vindicates everything Jesus claimed and taught. The resurrection changes the trajectory of lives. The hope of reunion is founded upon resurrection, of which Christ is the first fruits. Union with Christ and familiarity with His resurrection power enables me to live righteously.
