Today we walk through the events around the resurrection of Jesus, what they meant to people 2000 years ago and what they mean to us.
So what happened on Good Friday?
Middle of the night: Jesus is secretly arrested and illegally tried by the high priests.
6:00 to 8:00 am: Jesus’s trial before Pontius Pilate and Herod, where he is sentenced to be crucified. He is mocked and brutally beaten.
8:00 to 8:30 am: Jesus is forced to carry his own cross to Golgotha, the place where he will be crucified.
9:00am to 12pm: Jesus is nailed to the cross. Where he is left to suffer and die.
Noon: The sky grew dark in the middle of the day.
Noon to 3:00 pm: Jesus looks at those who crucified him and says – “Father forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
3:00 pm: Jesus cried out, ‘My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?’” The earth shook, the curtain is torn in two. And finally Jesus said, ‘It is finished,’ and breathed his last.
But that’s not the end of the story! At sunrise on Sunday, the grave opened and he arose! The events unfold in Luke 24:1-12.
As his followers try to wrap their heads around what has happened the past few days, Jesus himself appears to two of them and discusses these happenings as they walk to Emmaus. Luke 24:13-34.
What does this mean for us today? It means that Jesus has taken our sin upon himself and offers forgiveness and freedom from the chains that bind us. Romans 10:9 says that we simply need to confess our sin and believe that He arose from the grave to be saved.
